RCP&E Rail Reconstruction & Expansion
This project increased the capacity of the Rapid City, Pierre & Eastern Railroad by completing two strategic improvements in Huron and Philip, SD. Construction replaced 9.33 miles of old 100 pound jointed rail with new 115 pound continuous welded rail and installed 7,550 new ties near Huron, South Dakota. This allows train speeds to increase from 10 mph to 40 mph in this section.
Previously, the 165 miles between Fort Pierre and Rapid City had no meaningful main line siding capacity to allow two large trains to pass. This restricted operations over the entire section of railroad to only one train at a time, severely limiting the total volume that can be moved over the main line. Construction of a new 7,642 foot siding near Philip, South Dakota, now allows up to an additional 100 trains per year to move over this section.
