Mitchell Pepsi Soccer Park

Similar to Brookings, SD's joint-use Fishback Soccer Park, the Mitchell Pepsi Soccer Park was funded by City dollars and private donations and is a shared venture that benefits the City of Mitchell, SD and Dakota Wesleyan University. Civil Design Inc. was selected by a local task force from a short list of four firms to provide design and construction administration services on this project.

Ten regulation-size soccer fields were constructed, with one field designed as a stadium field, complete with press box, grandstand, and lighting suitable for television filming. The stadium field is used for championship games in tournaments and for Dakota Wesleyan University’s soccer program home games.

Civil Design Inc. also planned a support building in the Park that includes a concession area, restrooms, locker rooms, a referee room, and a storage area. Additionally, CDI designers created ample space for both cars and busses in the parking area. 

A distinctive aspect of this project was the irrigation system, the source of which is Lake Mitchell. CDI's innovative engineers designed a pumping station and a system of redundant piping to provide the necessary water for irrigation. Unique to the pumping station is a primary pump and a jockey pump, the latter of which will supply enough water for a single irrigation zone or a garden hose for limited watering.

The pumping station was placed in an existing park and camping area on Lake Mitchell. The area proved ideal because it was city-owned and CDI did not have to obtain easements or additional property to house the pump station. As part of the station, an inlet pipe was installed in the lake. This portion of the construction was even more unique—and challenging—because the inlet pipe was installed completely under water.

Having successfully completed sporting facilities for South Dakota State University, the City of Brookings, SD, and the City of Estelline, SD, Civil Design Inc. has earned an outstanding regional reputation for providing athletic complex designs that are both functional and conductive to the highest level of competition available in the area.
