Shanard Road Replacement Bridge
CDI was the primary consultant for the design of the replacement bridge over Firesteel Creek on Shanard Road northeast of Mitchell.
The design of this structure utilized precast bulb tee girders, manufactured by Cretex West. Abutments were cast-in-place concrete on steel piles. One unique aspect of this structure was the incorporation of a walkway along the north side of the bridge. This feature was added with the idea that a bike path may be constructed along the north side of the existing road. The walkway will allow pedestrian and bike traffic to cross the bridge.
The use of precast concrete girders allowed the bridge to be constructed very quickly compared with other alternative methods of construction. Considering the detour length and volume of traffic, this was an important consideration to the owner. This structure was completed in the fall of 2006.
