Kennebec Grain Transfer Facility
CDI has partnered with the South Dakota Wheat Growers Association to design and construct several grain transfer facilities throughout the state of South Dakota. The Kennebec facility was designed as a state-of-the-art shuttle loader facility with a rail loading capacity of 80,000 bushels per hour. The railroad loop track was designed for BNSF shuttle trains of 120 cars. Although this facility is served by the Dakota Southern Railroad (DSR), there is a mutual agreement to move BNSF trains over the DSR to Kennebec making for a very efficient transportation system.
CDI worked with the SD DOT to perform traffic studies for incoming truck traffic at this location. Complementary to the railcar loadout, the facility has a truck receiving capacity of 60,000 bushels per hour, with storage capacity of 4.08 million bushels; this necessitated a CDI design in which turning lanes in and out of the facility were safe and efficient.
As a secondary project, CDI also designed and managed the construction of a new Agronomy Center site with a capacity of 150,000 gallons of liquid fertilizer and 13,500 tons of dry fertilizer with a 200 ton blending tower and seed treatment facility.
