Fishback Soccer Park
Civil Design Inc was involved in this project as a technical consultant to the task force during the planning phase, and later as the engineer of record for the entire project. This project was planned for recreational use, high school competition, and for SDSU's NCAA Division I women's soccer program. The design included special consideration to the layout for tournaments utilizing the entire complex, as well as walkways for handicap accessibility.
The scope of the project included construction of ten full-size soccer fields. One of the fields was designed as a stadium field for championship games and SDSU Soccer home games, and includes a grandstand, press box, and field lighting to a level suitable for television filming. The support building incorporated in the design includes locker rooms, restrooms, a concessions area, referee room, and general storage. CDI also designed parking areas that provide adequate parking for both cars and busses during tournaments.
Irrigation for Fishback Soccer Park was separately designed and bid by Brookings Parks, Recreation & Forestry Department. The Department also performed many secondary functions such as tree planting, constructing the press box, and finishing the support building.
Challenges of this project included constructing the fields to an elevation that would be minimally affected by high water, access to potable water and sanitary sewer, due to the proximity of the site to the city infrastructure, and final grading to tolerances of ±0.05 feet. As part of the design, the borrow area used for construction of the fields was incorporated into the city's overall drainage plan as a storm water detention area.
Civil Design Inc was awarded the 2003 Outstanding Civil Engineering Project by the Eastern Branch of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) for this design.
