A Proud History, an Exciting Future.
Civil Engineer Carey Bretsch, PE founded Civil Design Inc. in 2000. Located in Brookings, South Dakota, Carey was one of CDI's only two employees for the first year. CDI operated its business out of a rented house, while its client base—and its reputation—grew exponentially.
Civil Design Inc. quickly established itself as one of the region's premier firms. In 2003, CDI received the prestigious "Outstanding Civil Engineering Project" award from the Eastern Branch of the American Society of Civil Engineers for their innovative design of the Fishback Soccer Park in Brookings, South Dakota.
By 2004, CDI employed five full-time and two part-time employees. As the firm continued to grow, Carey began to make plans for a new office building. In late 2008, the company moved the firm's operations to our stunning new office on Main Avenue South in Brookings. Baldridge-Nelson Architects of Sioux Falls, one of our partner firms, created the bold design of this spacious office.
Also in 2008, CDI learned that Inc. Magazine ranked Civil Design Inc. #1 in the top 50 fastest growing, privately-held independent engineering firms in the nation. The firm’s explosive 553 percent increase in sales between 2004 and 2007 led to CDI earning the number 585 spot on the same magazine's "Top 5000" list of the country's fastest-growing, privately-held, independent companies.
Another accolade was added in 2011, when CDI landed the #5 spot on Construction Digital Magazine’s Top 10 Engineering Firms.
Today, CDI continues to expand its regional presence with professionals licensed in South Dakota, North Dakota, Nebraska, Minnesota, Iowa, Wisconsin, and Indiana. CDI's principal partners guide 10 engineering and surveying professionals and an office manager to success on many kinds of projects, including highways, bridges, parking-lot designs, sports complexes, as well as the firm’s undeniable niche in the railroad industry.
